PITS

I definitely agree with Dr. Faverty's statement last Monday that effective leaders use PITS and those that work with both guns blazing are often times "fried."   This is definitely the case in public education.  Administrators are confronted with a plethora of situations that usually lead to discomfort.  As a result, administrators must carefully chose their battles and slither carefully between teachers unions, parents, students, district administrators, PTA, and the community at large.  PITS and a huge smile would be successful tools that any administrator can pull out of their toolbox  for any given situation.

Thanks,

Frank G.

  1. Sounds great Frank. I totally agree that administrators have a lot to navigate on a daily basis. Also, I find it interesting that you use the verb "slither" when referring to administrators' movements. That term implies administrators are under attack and they must be stealth with their actions, kind of the complete opposite of the "guns blazing," which Patrick mentioned. I don't know if you meant to elicit this reaction, but it would be an interesting conversation.

We discussed the pitfalls of unsheathing your weapons; is there an equal downside to being too passive?

  3. "PITS and a huge smile", I like that. Reminds me of my Uncle Joe, from who I get my tendency to talk to strangers. By all means, someone should have punched his lights out by now, but he always makes his comments with a huge smile and people just don't know what they should do, laugh or take it personally. Most people try to avoid conflict with stranger so they just smile back.
